Murphysboro, Illinois is a city found in Jackson County, and it also serves as the county seat. As of 2010, this community was home to about 8,000 people, and it is locate within the Metro Lakeland area. Murphysboro is found about 5 miles southeast of Kinkaid Lake. The city was established in September 1843 and is the second county seat for Jackson County, and the community’s birth was a result of a fire that destroyed the courthouse in Brownsville, the previous county seat. Murphysboro is located about 8 miles west of Carbondale and 60 miles southwest of Mt. Vernon.

Murphysboro is home to several notable attractions and places to visit. There are also a couple of notable events held in Murphysboro, including the Apple Festival and the Murphysboro Riverside Blues Festival, both of which are put on during the month of September. Outdoor recreation is available at the Lake Murphysboro State Park Conservation Area. There are also a variety of specialty shops located in Murphysboro, including Sis’s Memories, Lette’s Shop, and Ruthie’s Florist and Gifts.

Murphysboro is known for its varied weather conditions throughout the year. During the summer, conditions tend to be hot and humid, and since the community is located directly in Tornado Alley, severe thunderstorms with tornados are also common. Windstorms are also a possibility, such as the derecho windstorm of May 2009 that destroyed homes and left the community without electricity for an entire week. July is the hottest month of the year, and the average high temperature reaches approximately 86 degrees. Central air is a necessity in order to make it through these hot months.

Winters in Murphysboro are cold and tend to be snowy. January is the coldest month of the year, and high temperatures reach the mid-30s. The community tends to get about 20 inches of snow per year. When heavy snowfall and cold temperatures move into the area, residents are appreciative of their heat pump or furnace systems.
